Eugene
His name — “Eugene” — is from the Greek word for “well born”; this 4-year-old, 47 lb. American Staffordshire Terrier mix boy lives up to his distinguished moniker, and more. Eugene was found stray, we don’t know where he learned to love so completely and so gently. Call him and he comes at a gallop, then screeches to a halt and sits loyally at your felt, face smiling, tail wagging, ready to exchange fervent kisses. (He doesn’t jump on you). Eugene adores a leash walk and is a favorite with volunteers; he thinks people, including little ones are delightful; he can already sit for a treat and he’s working on his house training. (He excelled as Adoption office dog and we picture him living inside.) Eugene’s been treated for heart worm and should now need only preventive care, he doesn’t like to share his food, and gives cats a definite “maybe.” Come meet the calm companion with the aristocratic manners; Eugene’s already neutered and ready to join your well born family today.

Otter
Her purr’s as golden as her gleaming mustache — 4-month-young Torti-cat Otter’s as rich a friend as you’ll find, from her silky ebony and orange coat to her slow double-wink eyes, to the peaceful way she rests her head on your shoulder and hums with contentment. Unlike many her age, Otter’s gentle enough for even young children, she’s outgoing and playful, but wise and careful, too, and her tidy box and nice manners make her popular with other cats. She’s still so little we ask that you keep her inside a few more months, the better to enjoy her lavish affection. Come meet the young girl who’ll double your heart’s wealth in an instant, a treasure named Otter is waiting.

Riley
His name’s Riley but he never gets riled — this 2- year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix’s temperament is as calm as his delicate pink smile; he’s so pleasant we’ve never even seen him potty in his pen. Handsome Riley was found stray, a 55 lb. white and brindle gent with a naturally affectionate, laid-back style; he loves a nice head scratch, gets along fine with other dogs, thinks a pull toy’s a blast, is good on a leash, and can already sit for a treat. (Riley’s food motivated and would respond well to training.) Riley’s destined to be a fine family dog; we suggest bigger kids because of his size, and a nice yard to run in, too. Come see how composed a young boy can be, and how easy it is to love an easygoing friend named Riley.

Baby
She’s spun from a cloud of tri-color fur; at 4 years and only 5 lbs., little Baby’s airy coat is bigger than she is, but the quiet personality underneath is as warm her soft terra cotta shading. Baby’s elegance is mostly unspoken (she’ll chatter vivaciously for food and treats.) Beyond that she’s content to rub her exquisite face on you, do velvety figure eights at your ankles, and generally remind you that she’s the most glamorous and dependable friend you’ve ever had. Baby’s fine with dogs but will take her time with other cats, mostly because she doesn’t see herself as one; and she prefers to live inside, where it’s easier to stay lovely. Baby’s already spayed and ready to go home with you today, come hold this weightless wonder in your hands and heart.

Pets of the Week August 11, 2014

Olivia
You would be hard pressed to find a more charming companion than Olivia. She was tip-top of her class at this years’ Camp Good Dog for Kids, mastering all manner of commands. She walks on leash with a runway models prowess, and at 7 months old she is brimming with “All-Star” potential. Olivia is a versatile hound mix with just as much good looks as smarts and good old fashioned personality. Her bright white coat is marked with caramel colored patches and the occasional grass stain from begging for belly rubs. Olivia shines brightest in a crowd, adoring children of all ages and pets of all kinds, the more the merrier is this girls motto. A larger pup, she will do best in an active home or one with a fenced in yard to romp in. Come visit Olivia and see for yourself what a fun furry friend could add to your life.

Kendra
With a faraway gaze, little Miss Kendra is the ultimate day dreamer. All the time that she’s spent with her head in the clouds has paid off, leaving her as gentle, plush, and soft as can be. Kendra’s short coat is patched grey and gold with watercolor artistry. At only one year old, her personality is purr-fectly peaceful and serene even with plenty of feline roommates. One can only imagine what this lovely young lady is pondering, as she sits in her favorite window; a cozy, quiet home full of comfy perches and sunny views outside, with a family always happy to cuddle. For now she sits patiently waiting at her lookout point for her new family to walk into her life and make this fanciful feline a true day dream believer.

Pets of the Week August 4, 2014

Malcolm
His calm, unfailing diplomacy goes way beyond normal puppy skills, but 5- month- old Hound/American Pit Bull mix Malcolm is anything but ordinary. Hold him in your arms and he’s a snuggly, buff -colored baby; put him down and he’s a quiet, gentle, trustworthy companion to kids. Malcolm’s temperament’s so adored by other dogs he’s in two play groups; our big dogs love him especially — maybe that’s because he’ll grow from his present 25 lbs. to a 50-60 lb. big boy himself; his heart already seems vast. Malcolm’s smart, impressionable and imminently trainable; he already knows not to jump on you, simply because he’s naturally polite. Come meet the handsome little boy with the fun kisses and refined ways, and marvel at the magic of Malcolm.

Angelica
Why she needs Prozac is a mystery — what beautiful 2-year-old tiger girl, with lovely orange and creamy white markings interspersed in her stripes, who’s social, attentive, affectionate, and talkative has reason to need an antidepressant? But Angelica’s behavior was unpredictable without her meds (she played a wee bit too hard and on occasion would bite) and the vet suggested we give it a try, and now she’s a Prozac success story if there ever was one. Angelica would like to be your only pet, and in a home with some nice, civilized adults would suit her perfectly. She has no choice but to be on her medicine forever, and will gladly reimburse you for the small monthly expense with exuberant head rubs and a plethora of cheerful chirps. Come see how charming a Prozac purr can be, and how forever-happy you and Angelica can feel; she’s already spayed and can go home today.
