Pets of the Week June 26, 2017

Chapman is a focused athlete, designed to be a running, hiking, or walking buddy. Having a large, fenced-in yard for this lean running machine would be best for keeping him at home base and allowing him the exercise to be happy. Independent and intelligent by nature, he’s a dog of few words, preferring the polite greeting, a kiss or a treat, then it’s time to go on a run. Forming a bond with his new family will enable Chapman’s personality and charm to come out.

Esmeralda, meaning emerald, is probably the most considerate cat you will ever meet. This black and brown Tabby finds napping in a nook and curling in a corner to be her “Chicken Soup For The Soul.” She enjoys being pet and receiving quiet affection because what else is there to do for a lazy, laid-back cat? Her bright yellow eyes speak truer about her kindness than any written words. This tiger-striped cat is unique in every way and one that any cat-lover would want as a friend.

Pets of the Week June 19, 2017

Handsome, regal, and steady, Phillip bears many similarities to the Norwegian Forest cat. It’s easy to visualize he once was a great cat king and now his time is spent in relaxed and reflective retirement. He often sits and looks out the windows as if surveying his kingdom or perhaps he imagining that he’ll soon be in a new home. Phillip goes with the flow seeing no need to create problems that don’t exist. Other cats and dogs are of no concern to him or he can handle anything. He’s a cat who’s more than a cat.

Luke is the kind of dog who makes you shake your head and chuckle. His individuality stems from being a Chihuahua and Dachshund mix who’s IQ is above average. Some say he has a “Napoleon complex,” but it’s more accurate that it’s a “Luke complex.” This little guy has a huge personality and a genuine love for people. His happy energy and “I’m glad to see you!” grin are irresistible and if you lean in close enough, he’ll give you a big smooch on the chin. Luke is a Camp Good Dog for Kids graduate where he learned he’s still always in charge.

It Comes at Night



It Comes at Night is an emotionally and paranoia-driven thriller. The trailer is a bit misleading. It makes you think there are creatures that attack during the night (zombies? infected people?), but that is not the case. There is a disease running throughout the country and an isolated family is working to stay safe.

The movie opens with this family having to deal with the grandfather who is beginning to show signs of infection. Later someone attempts to break in looking for supplies. He, his wife and child are eventually invited to stay.

The story continues on with the new members integrating into the family and their chores. Everything is going fine until the 17-year old son finds the entrance open one night.

The consequences of this discovery show just how far people will go for their family when pushed into a corner.

The final scene is still sitting with me.

A word of warning – this is a slow-burn movie.

Pets of the Week June 12, 2017

She has Spock’s ears, Einstein’s intelligence, and Disney’s creativity. Pretty Girl doesn’t wait for others to play with her, she makes her own games and finds ways to enjoy each moment. She’s an active 40 lb. Terrier mix who shares the same spirit of fun and wonderment as that of a child. Being well-balanced, she shares equal parts of play time with equal parts of quiet time. Snuggling is just about as satisfying to her as chasing a tennis ball. Almost. Look into her mesmerizing, khaki-colored eyes and there’s no denying that is filled with pure joy.

Four-year-old Liza is a gorgeous, eye-catching full-figured gal. She wears a stunning brown and orange coat and impeccable eye makeup. She’s generally laid back choosing to nap away the hours. But when it’s feeding time — be ready. No food bowl can be filled fast enough for this cat. She’ll come alive with the energy she’s saved while sleeping and make a fast and furious bolt for the food bowl. Besides food, she very much enjoys conversations with people and their affection.

The Mummy (2017)

This third iteration of the Mummy is better than I expected. We get a bit of an introduction to the ideas of Universal’s shared monster movie universe, Dark Universe. And we get a setup for Maverick and Jor-El to appear in many or all of the future Dark Universe movies

I do have to admit that my expectations for this movie were extremely low.

Nick and Vale stumble across the tomb of Ahmanet. Nick ends up freeing her and hijinks ensues. Ahmanet was imprisoned when she tried to bring the Egyptian death god, Set, into the mortal world. This movie equates Set with all that is evil: Lucifer, Satan, etc. Since Nick freed her, she needs to use him as the vessel for Set in the modern day.

The rest of the movie revolves around Nick and Jeckyl’s organization working for a resolution. Just at cross purposes.
