Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is an entertaining, emotional film.

Children in the theater were scared at some points. Adults and kids were tearing up at others (myself included). This movie was an excellent follow-up to Jurassic World and it leaves it open for sequels or side story movies as well.

After the events of Jurassic World, the island has been deserted and the dinosaurs left to live. But the volcano at the center of the island has recently become active and threatens to re-extinct the dinosaurs.

We see some congressional hearings on the rights of engineered animals. We see activist groups lobbying. Claire is actually running on such group. She gets a call form someone working for a Mr. Lockhart – a former partner of John Hammond.

They have a geographically isolated island ready to evacuate the dinosaurs to. They just need Claire’s help to get into the system at the park and Owen’s help to wrangle Blue.

Unfortunately, the operation is not as innocent as it seemed. Claire and Owen’s team get double-crossed and left on the island as the volcano pops its top. Turns out the dinosaurs are going to auction – not the Sanctuary island.

They just barely make it off the island and to the Lockhart estate in time to throw monkey wrenches in the auction.

There is a new engineered dino on the loose. Cloning ethics. Murder for money.

I’m not sure where the franchise goes from here, but I am looking forward to it. This was definitely the darker toned middle chapter of a trilogy – like Empire Strikes Back.

Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda, James Cromwell, Toby Jones, Ted Levine, Isabella Sermon, BD Wong, Jeff Goldblum

Pets of the Week June 25, 2018

The meaning of Sinclair is “bright and clear,” and it’s clear that you will love this jovial guy the moment you look into his bright, black-rimmed, butterscotch eyes. Accenting those mesmerizing eyes is his Joker-sized grin, long athletic legs and a blended buckskin and white coat. Playtime is the best time for Sinclair, and he’d love a human or canine buddy who also thrives on clowning around, racing through the yard, and getting into whatever doggy shenanigans come to mind. This active guy is game for anything! Adopt Sinclair and you’ll be able to channel his playful energy so that you, too can climb the highest mountains and swim the deepest sea, all with your new best friend.

This regal kitty is named after Nefertari, the Egyptian Queen. The name means “The Beautiful Companion,” which is perfect for this sweet, loving, 2-year-old brown and white tabby. Nephie is a quiet girl, a little bashful at first, but quick to warm up to those she meets, showing off her affectionate nature by rubbing her head under your chin and settling in for cuddles. She prefers a somewhat peaceful environment rather than a rambunctious one. That being said, when she’s in the mood, she’s more than happy to show off her playful side. Nephie seems to be relaxed around children and other cats, so she should be content in a variety of home situations. Visit Nephie at Petsmart and adopt this royal beauty today.

Tag

This was more touching than I expected it to be. It was not a laugh a minute comedy, but did showcase a group of friends using a game of tag to stay in each others lives.

The videos at the end show the real life men this movie is based on. Showing that part of the mall scene was based directly on real life events.

Starring: Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, LilRel Howery, Jon Hamm, Annabelle Wallis, Isla Fisher, Hannibal Buress, Nora Dunn, Leslie Bibb, Rashida Jones

Pets of the Week June 18, 2018

Kai is about as fun-loving as they come, offering everyone he meets a big grin and a playful swish of the tail. He’s just a little over 18 months old, so this handsome brown and tan Retriever mix is chock-full of energy. He loves spending his time running around with a canine friend, especially if that buddy is as rough-and-tumble as he is himself. He’s always delighted to receive a new toy, which he’ll gladly share with his furry friends. The one thing he’s not too fond of is cats, which he sees as wonderful things to chase. Kai has a sweet, loving personality and his medium size is ideal. He is hoping to find a family who will embrace his high energy and provide him the training his sharp mind craves.

Skittles is one fun, playful little kitty. In fact, he’s so full of energy, you might think he’s just eaten an entire bag of the colorful sweets for which he’s named. At just over 4 months old, it’s not surprising this adorable brown and white Tabby is so spunky. He loves to spend his time batting around toys and wrestling with a feline friend. Skittles is a loving boy with his humans as well, vying for attention and happily accepting cuddles and scratches. He’s rather like a fearless little boy who wants to try anything and everything, and once he’s explored his environment and filled his day with as much fun as possible, he’ll find his favorite spot and snooze.

Hereditary

I am not sure how I feel about this one. This is another movie you can take a face value – the events happened as we see them – or there is mental illness involved along the maternal line. Making just about everyone in the movie an unreliable narrator.

Hereditary is a slow burn, atmospheric piece. Definitely some WTF moments in the movie.

We start with the funeral of Annie’s mother. Someone she was not close to. After an accident and another funeral, events begin to spiral out of control.

During the course of the movie, we learn her mother had Disassociative Identity Disorder and Dementia. Her brother killed himself as a teenager. Her daughter has something going on. She herself slept walked and almost killed her kids a few years ago. All of this makes Annie and her kids unreliable narrators.

I prefer to think Annie experienced a psychotic break instead of the devil-cult ending we get.

Starring: Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd
