Yes, of course she’s housetrained —she’ll sit on command too — but when you’re as wholesome and pleasing as the girl next door, those are minor accomplishments! Our small, beautifully mannered American Staffordshire Lou Anne is gently refined and affectionately civilized; she responds perfectly to your praise, more delicious to her than any treat. Lou Anne, a 6 year old little lady — healthy, cordial and intelligent — and looking lovely in her black and white coat. The kind soul who lost her will never stop missing her. Lou Anne’s delightfully fun with kids and great with other dogs and cats too; her niceness is as real as it is trustworthy. Come meet this smiling champion of the heart; she’ll make your family joyfully complete, and bring her carefully polished “company” manners, too.

He’s a gentleman so replete with Southern hospitality he comes with second helpings of himself — and 3rd and 4ths, too! Our gentle orange Big Boy’s so large he’s like the Louisiana Purchase, a vast territory of friendship, massively loving and infinitely delightful, ready to annex himself to that special person who values the beauty of a companion who’s waistline-challenged. At 7 years old Big Boy’s health is just fine, thank you, he eats special food to maintain his present figure; he was turned in by his owner and is looking for a home with grownups who’ll pet to him to hear his capacious purr; cats, big kids and mannerly dogs are fine too. Hold him in your lap and admire his pleasing girth and his clean, carefully groomed coat, then put him down and watch him drag his pillow around and hide under it like he’s a turtle with a shell. Big Boy’s just entertaining himself; he’s not shy at all, and he’s much cozier than a turtle. Come enjoy a buffet of friendship named Big Boy; you won’t find a more sincere sidekick anywhere, or more immeasurable fun.

She’s as elegant as a long-legged runway model, but she prances instead of strutting, and her gleaming coat conceals a tender girlish shyness she overcomes quickly when you hold out your hand. Precious is a spritely 7-month terrier mix beauty, and at only 12 lbs. she’s as streamlined as joy gets — she may still grow a little but her gentle, happy heart will always be her biggest feature. Precious was found stray, but she’s too playfully affectionate not to have known human love somewhere — she’s great with other dogs and mature kids, is working on her housetraining, and would make delightfully attentive companion to you and your family. Come meet a shining example of how elegance can be low maintenance and why sweetness is always in style — then pick up our Precious girl and hold her next to your heart.

Five-month old Allie was found wandering in Ware Shoals with her brother; she’s playful and curious, a hunting wonder who’ll entertain you with her antics and then report for a soft snuggle-purr-head rub, so you don’t feel neglected. Allie’s destined to be a small cat but her adoration for you and your kids is mighty — she likes other cats and dogs too. Come trace her ancestors’ stripes with your finger tip and revel in her softness, then surrender yourself for the prey that you and take her home to make you wildly happy.

First he’ll win you over with his excellent housetraining; then he’ll pull at your heartstrings in a spirited tug of war, and you’ll be a goner for sure. Our fun-making Lab/Boxer mix Walsh adores the game — especially having you on the other end — and he always plays for keeps. At just one year, our former stray Walsh holds his handsome head proudly when you walk him on a leash, and his affinity for children is instant, gentle and natural. The gleam on his easy-care coat may blind you but you can’t overlook his exuberance; his affection-filled heart is bursting to make you his own. Come look into his warm brown eyes and see how a young boy named Walsh can embody all you desire in a steadfast family dog, and more.

Rounding out the “Back in Black” theme, Salem is a hunka hunka burning love brimming with sugary sweet affection. He is very talkative and ready to accompany you as you perform your household routines or enjoy your recreational activities. I am comfortable indoors or out — a little of both worlds is great for me. Some of my favorite activities include sunbathing and long naps on any comfy surface I can find. I get along with both dogs and cats alike.

Pets of the Week February 13, 2012

Dana is a one year old “foxy” terrier who is quite adept at finding ways to get to your heart. She takes her time to warm up, constantly assessing what she likes about you, and once you’re “a-okay,” then she will allow you to spend time with her. A perfect day for her includes some napping in the sun and cuddle time with her people. She is very direct when she wants attention — every girl wants you to know what will make her happy — and, if her vocal communication doesn’t work, she will resort to showing you her soulful puppy dog eyes. She does well with friendly felines and children, although she is little pickier about her canine companions. So if you’re looking for an independent female who can take care of herself, a cheerleader for you when you go on walks, or just someone to snuggle and watch movies with — Dana is the dog for you!

Nym is a four to five-month-old Buff Tabby youngster who was found wandering in Ninety Six lost from her home. Nobody came looking for her at the animal shelter, so she’s “on the market” for adoption. Nym is quite talkative. Quite. What exactly it is that she’s saying is up to your imagination. She loves attention and affection, along with access to an available lap for cuddling and napping. It’s best to let her call the shots when it comes to what activities you and she will engage in because you’ll get to hear about it if you don’t. Come to the Humane Society of Greenwood and adopt Nym to get a shot of nonstop entertainment and love added to your home.

Pets of the Week February 6, 2012

“Jubilant” is the word for this tug-of-war loving brindle boy — at almost 2 years old he’s the best of the American Staffordshire breed, brimming with affection and a massive play ethic, an effusive bundle of loving energy, all focused on YOU. Murphy was abandoned by his owners but his heart emerged unscathed; now he’ll happily be your outside dog — room to play is a must for him. Inside or out, this courageous youngster needs and deserves your caring attention. Our amiable Murphy enjoys the company of other dogs (beware, little dogs, he might romp right over you.) And his natural devotion to kids and family is yours for the asking. He’s not housetrained yet, but watch him cock his head when you give him instructions — he hangs on your every word and will strive to become your dream come true, just as surely as you’ll be his. Come see the stuff legendary loyalty is made of — ask for Murphy.

He’s a thoroughbred of a family cat — big, strong, intelligent and handsomer than heck, with a chiseled face, long, airy orange and white fur, and an outsized purr as exceptional as the rest of him; pick him up and he thrill-purrs high and low all at once, kind of harmonizing with himself, and certainly with you. After 10 years of tried and true loyalty, a divorce has landed this healthy, magnificent man-cat here, but Boo’s heart is as vast as the rest of him, and with eons of love left to give, he’s ready to move on. Gentleman Boo’s downy-soft fur is constantly clean, his box-keeping habits are admirable, he gets along fine with other cats, and he loves to talk — what better way to share daily wisdom? He’s already neutered and ready to go home with you today; don’t wait to claim the comfort of your exciting new friend named Boo.
