Powers #26 – Weekly Comic Pick

Powers 26Powers #26

We continue to see the fallout from the Powers virus running rampant through the populace.  Now Deena is a suspect.  Turns out Walker’s new partner is actually an Internal Affairs plant lloking for dirt on Deena and Walker.  This title is consistently my number one pick when it comes out.

This is not for kids.  And the price has recenty risen to $3.99 a copy.  But Bendis and Oeming are giving us extra pages of content to go along with the price increase.  As well as better cover stock. (more…)

Hack/Slash (Devils Due Publishing – Tim Seeley)

Cassie Hack and her large hulking friend Vlad hunt Slashers – think Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers.  This series is awesome.  It started as a bunch of mini-series and one shots (get the trades!) and is now an ongoing series.  And as you will see mentioned on the cover of every issue  Soon to be a Major Motion Picture.  God I hope they don’t screw it up.  I hope it’s more in vein with Batman Begins than the Fantastic Four movie or heaven forbid the Hulk. Necessary Evil #1 – Weekly Comic Pick

Necessary Evil #1 (Desperado Publishing)

Jacob and his twin brother discover their single mother’s secret job in the worst possible way – seeing her death portrayed on the evening news. Turns out their mother was a Super Villain. After 10 years bouncing through the foster system, they receive a note and map. The map leads to a top secret Super Villain school. This title is simply amazing. I love the concept and how they setup the initial dynamic between the two brothers and their future classmates. (more…)

52 Week 36 – Weekly Comic Pick

Let me preface this week with the following: I still have not received Justice Society of America #2 or Invincible #37.

52 Week 36
This issue focuses heavily on the Space Team. We finally see the Lobo we all know and loathe surface. We see that Charlie did not in fact die on New Years, but he is in very very bad shape. Renee decides that she will get him to Nanda Parbat. We see the fallout from Waller’s Suicide Squad attack on the Black Marvel Family. Sobek helps Osiris deal with the loss of the Teen Titans’ trust. I just can’t help the feeling that Sobek is going to be instrumental in screwing over the Black Marvel family at some point. We finally see Rip Hunter!! And who has been secretly helping him. And where he has been hiding. All this and someone dies.

Top 5 – Ongoing Comic Series

Powers [Icon]
written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Michael Avon Oeming
This is a wonderful crime comic set in a superpowered world. Walker and Deena are homicide detectives dealing in special cases where super powers are involved. Walker is a former hero, Diamond. Through the series we have learned his history from beginning (literally) to his de-powerment, to his recent repowerment as the Millenium Guard. I highly recommend picking up all the trades for powers – check my amazon store. This is not a title for kids however.

Invincible [Image]
written by Robert Kirkman
This is the absolute best superhero comic being published today. Mark Davis discovers that he has super powers one day. His reaction. “Finally” See, Mark’s father is the world’s number one hero – Omni-man. A visitor from another world. I know, you’re thinking Super-Man. But you couldn’t be more wrong. We follow Mark as he progresses in his hero career. This series is worth picking up single issues and picking up the hardback collections.

Walking Dead [Image]
written by Robert Kirkman
Zombies. I could stop there. This title isn’t so much about zombies as the people who are trying to survive this zombie outbreak. Kirkman makes zero attempts to explain why the zombies are walking the earth. They just are. This is another title nor for kids. Especially after the most recent issue published.

A Re-telling of Spidey’s life with a modern twist. This is a teenaged Spidey. His identity is not public knowledge. In many ways, just better Spidey stories than in regular continuity.

One issue andthis title has me hooked. If I had had more than one issue to base it on, JSA would probably have bumped someone from my top 5
